RNA is a fragile molecule, well-known to be susceptible to RNase-mediated degradation and hydrolysis in alkaline environments. We use this buffer—1 mM Sodium Citrate, pH 6.5—for resuspending and storing all our RNA samples. This buffer strikes a balance between providing superior RNA stability than standard nuclease-free water or TE buffer, and also ensuring compatibility with standard molecular biology applications (e.g., cell transfections) where pH changes can be damaging to cells. The slightly acidic pH of the buffer prevents RNA hydrolysis, while the sodium citrate acts as a chelator of metal ions which activate RNases. As with all our products, our 1 mM Sodium Citrate, pH 6.5 buffer is prepared under sterile conditions and subjected to rigorous QC checks to guarantee purity and performance.
