As mRNA scientists ourselves, we needed a robust solution to keep our working environment sterile and RNase-free. We tested a few different commercially available products but figured we could do better, so we came up with our own formulation and put it to the test.

Although DIY RNase decontamination solutions might seem like a worthy alternative due to their low cost and ease of preparation (for example, the Pipette Jockey website features a protocol for preparing your own bleach-based formulation here), sometimes these can fail to provide any real and adequate RNA protection. In our experiments, the Pipette Jockey bleach-based formulation failed to provide RNA protection even at the lowest RNase concentration of 0.3 ng/square mm (results available upon request). SureFire™️, on the other hand, protected RNA samples from degradation at RNase concentrations of up to 30 ng/square mm (this was the highest RNase concentration we tested).
